What is a tree and where does it grow?

Like many other plants, a tree is a perennial: it grows for season after season. But it is different from other plants because of its woody stem or trunk.

Trees are usually divided into three classes.

1. The broadleaved - hardwood like the birch
2. The conifers -softwood trees
3. The palms

Most of the broadleaved trees shed their leaves once a year. Most of the conifers are evergreen. The leaves are not everlasting, however, but they stay on the tree for two years or more before being shed.

Most conifers have thin leaves, needles.

Trees cover about one quarter of the earth's land area. They grow in different kind of conditions. There are species that will grow very well in dry conditions, others will grow in swamps. Some trees can grow in hot and humid conditions but there are no trees in deserts or at higher altitudes.

In managed forests, where trees are felled only when they have grown mature, natural regenerations can be used but even there the seedlings need man's protection. Seedlings from nurseries are planted in place of the the that have been felled.
